Adding Target Languages to Magento

Before starting the localization of your content, it is important to ensure that the correct and necessary languages are enabled in your Magento instance. To do this, it is necessary to start by creating new / additional Store Views. To do so, follow the steps below

  1. Start by accessing your Magento instance with your admin username and password and you will be greeted with a dashboard that should look like this:

Magento - Dashboard 001.png
  1. Navigate to the left menu, and select the Stores → All Stores menu.

Magento - Add Store 001.png
  1. And choose the Create Store View button.

  1. Next, choose the store which will be translated into a different language (in our demo instance, we only have one store, but some users may see more options here) give this store view a name, as well as a code which can be used for easy identification, and be sure to enable the store status. When finished, select the Save Store View button in the top right corner.

  1. Now that an additional store view has been created, it requires a little bit of editing to ensure the translated content will be placed into the correct instance. Return to the main menu on the left, and choose the Stores → Configuration menu option.

  1. From the top left corner, choose the menu option next to Scope and select the store that requires editing for the intended target language.

  1. And from the General → Locale Options menu, deselect the Use Website checkbox so that the Locale in the given store view can be changed as needed, and select the target language for this store view. Additional changes can be made as necessary, but are not required for localization purposes.

  1. Select the Save Config button in the top right corner.

  1. Repeat the process for any additional languages you may require for your project, and you are ready to Locale: Adding the Magento Connector to your Locale instance and Locale: Creating a Locale project with the Magento Connector.
