How to use DeepL Glossaries

Introduction

Using the DeepL Glossary feature, you can specify translations for words and phrases that this MT provider should prefer over standard machine translation. There are two ways to add glossaries:

  • DeepL website and desktop application;

  • API.

How does it work?

It is important to note that there is no possibility to add glossaries from the XTM Cloud UI.

Glossaries created via the DeepL API are distinct from glossaries created via the DeepL website and DeepL desktop applications. This means that API glossaries cannot be used on the DeepL website and in DeepL desktop applications and vice versa. Therefore, even if you have glossaries in the web or desktop application, they will not appear in the API response when glossaries are obtained, so they will not be displayed in XTM Cloud either.

Currently, glossaries can only be created for the language combinations listed below. Further language combinations will be added in the future.

XTM Cloud supports languages which are naturally supported by DeepL itself. The languages in question can be viewed here: https://developers.deepl.com/docs/resources/supported-languages.

You can view a glossary list at global level. To do so:

  1. Select ConfigurationSettingsTranslationMachine translationDeepL Translator.

  2. Select the View button.

You can view a glossary list at customer level. To do so:

  1. Select CustomersCustomer list (select a customer)SettingsMachine translation.

  2. To the right of the List of glossaries function, select View:

At project and template level, you can choose whether or not to enable the glossary for a particular target language:

Issue with selecting which glossary to use

When you create a XTM Cloud project and select DeepL as your MT engine, the glossaries might not be shown as available for use, as shown in this example:

You can take the following steps to troubleshoot this issue:

  1. Check if you are able to create a glossary via the DeepL API.

  2. Refer to our detailed description of DeepL glossaries (select a relevant XTM Cloud version and then insert the phrase “DeepL glossaries”).

It is important to create glossaries via API on the DeepL side. If you do so, you must also perform synchronization in the global settings for your XTM Cloud instance.

To do so:

  1. Select ConfigurationSettingsTranslationMachine translationDeepL Translator.

  2. Select the Synchronize button.
