How to customize the docked panel in XTM Workbench

Introduction

You might sometimes experience a peculiar issue that, every time you open XTM Workbench, two different windows open up in your browser, only one of which contains the actual XTM Workbench. And the XTM Workbench window might not be your default window.

For example, the default window might contain the Comments tab screen, which is illogical and incorrect, since comments should all be listed in a sub-panel within XTM Workbench. And the same secondary window might also contain another Matches tab.

The fact that you can see these windows separately means that, at some point in time, you have opened the docked panel in a separate window by selecting a specific option that XTM Cloud offers for reconfiguring the docked panel. All the possibilities for customizing the docked panel in XTM Workbench are described below.

Docked panel customizing options

XTM Cloud offers a couple of options by means of which you can freely customize your docked panel.

Repositioning docked panel tabs

First things first: you can reposition docked panel tabs by left-clicking on them and dragging them to a new place:

Creating multiple panels within a single XTM Workbench window

The second thing that you can do is create multiple docked panels within a single XTM Workbench window. To so do, left-click a particular panel and drag it anywhere. in between existing panels, as shown in the screenshots below:

Moving tabs into a secondary window

The third option is to move a particular tab screen (or tab screens) into a secondary window. To do so, enter the tab screen that we want to move and then expand the panel context menu, on the right-hand side. Now decide whether you just want to move this specific tab screen (select the Open {TAB_NAME} in secondary window option) or all of them (select the Open all in secondary window option).

You can also move the entire docked panel, by going to Settings → Docked panels, and selecting Open in secondary window.

If you would like to bring the tab screen(s) in question back to the main XTM Workbench window, expand the context menu on the right-hand side of the move panel and select either Open {TAB_NAME} in main window or Open all in main window.

Restoring tab screens and panels to the default layout

If you would like to quickly bring everything back to its original layout, in the main XTM Workbench window, go to Settings → Docked panels, and select Rearrange to default.

You will have to confirm your decision by confirming and closing this popup window:

XTM Workbench customization

XTM Cloud goes even further in providing a wide range of possibilities for customizing the XTM Workbench layout.

As a user with administrative privileges, go to Configuration → Settings → Translation → Workflow and access → XTM Workbench customization. In this section, you can not only configure Simplified Mode and specify which users should use it, but specify whether or not each individual user should personally be able to customize their XTM Workbench layout, at their own discretion.

  • Enable XTM Workbench customization → This option enables or disables the option to grant access to the features available in XTM Workbench.

  • Allow user to customize XTM Workbench → This option enables or disables the option for users to configure XTM Workbench features within the editor. Users who have been denied access to some functions because Simplified Mode has been activated in their profiles will not be able to customize XTM Workbench.

    • Users of this kind will be able to choose which XTM Workbench features to disable entirely and which ones to keep, which gives them the possibility to customize their XTM Workbench layout in accordance with individual preferences and needs. To open this section, in XTM Workbench, go to Settings → Customized view.

  • Define Simplified Mode → Use this option to grant or deny access to particular XTM Workbench functions. The feature is user-specific and can be turned on/off in Users → User list → (select a user) → Access Rights → XTM Workbench.

IMPORTANT!

Simplified Mode is only available for internal users! LSPs make use of this feature on their own terms by enabling it separately in their XTM Cloud instance.
