Why are terms not highlighted in XTM Workbench?
Introduction
This article describes the most common reasons for which terms might not be highlighted in XTM Workbench. As you will see in the next section, certain conditions at XTM Cloud configuration level must be met first.
Prerequisites for highlighting terms in XTM Workbench
Immediate highlighting of terms
You might be wondering why terms in a project are not highlighted in blue immediately after you create a project and open XTM Workbench. The solution (administrative privileges required!) is to enable the Match terms in analysis option in Configuration → Settings → Translation → Terminology → Terminology engines → Match terms in analysis.
The above-mentioned option checks the entire file against the XTM Cloud terminology during project analysis. It will result in analysis taking longer but will mean that all terms will be highlighted in XTM Workbench, whether it is opened in "Read mode" or in "Edit mode".
If you do not select that option, or if you have changed the metadata for some terms, enter XTM Workbench in "Edit mode" and click through segments. XTM Cloud will perform a check for these segments and will generate an update that shows the newest metadata.
IMPORTANT!
On the other hand, if you recently imported terms that are applicable in an existing project, remember that you must reanalyze the entire project (with the option enabled), otherwise the Linguist will have to keep clicking through the segments in XTM Workbench.
Highlighting term variants (stemmed forms)
To learn how stemming works, we recommend that you read this article: Stemming.
To enable the highlighting of stemmed words in XTM Workbench, you need to select the Highlight all term variants option in Configuration → Settings → Translation → Terminology → Terminology options → Highlight all term variants.
No terms are highlighted
If you cannot highlight any terms, even though you have made sure that all the other settings are correct, we recommend that you double-check if the Disable term decoration option is deselected in Configuration → Settings → Translation → Terminology → Terminology options → Disable term decoration.
Decorating terms without translations
If you want the terms that have no translations to be highlighted in XTM Workbench, you need to select the Decorate terms without translations option in Configuration → Settings → Translation → Terminology → Terminology options → Decorate terms without translations.
IMPORTANT! It is important to note the difference between two terminology-related options that can be found in the QA profile’s settings:

Language combination
You can set up language combinations globally or per customer and the related configuration is very important in ensuring that terms are highlighted correctly in XTM Workbench.
If a particular customer for whom there are some terms is using the Customised language combinations only option (i.e. it has predefined language combinations for which its projects can exclusively be created) in its settings, ensure that a language combination that exists in the terminology tab for those terms is also set up there:
Existence of stop words
Remember that stop words are not highlighted in XTM Workbench by default. To learn what stop words actually are and to see a full list of them, we recommend that you read this article: What are stop words?.
