Trados Studio: Mapping XTM Cloud segment statuses to Trados Studio segment statuses

Introduction

XTM Cloud and Trados Studio operate on two different sets of segment status type. For this reason, in XTM Connect – Trados Studio, the segment statuses used in XTM Cloud must be aligned with the ones used in Trados Studio, for XTM Cloud XLIFF files. This alignment is called status mapping, in XTM Cloud.

Status mapping ensures that changes to the segments in XTM Cloud XLIFF files (for translation projects in XTM Cloud) that you work on in Trados Studio, finish, and deliver to XTM Cloud are registered correctly. The most important reason for the new XTM XLIFF file type is that you can, if necessary, use it to change the standard segment status settings for the XTM Cloud XLIFF files that are supplied in XTM Cloud translation projects.

In XTM Cloud, XLIFF status is the value of the attribute in the target tab. This attribute is assigned only in the target segments that contain some content.

How does it work?

To perform segment status mapping, proceed as follows:

  1. In Trados Studio, select File → OptionsFile types.

  2. Select the file type XTM Cloud XLIFF.

  3. In it, select the Segment status mapping option. You see the Segment status mapping window. At the top, you will see the Segment status mapping section. It contains two lists of segment statuses: XLIFF status for XTM Cloud and Studio status for Trados Studio.

The default segment status mappings from XTM Cloud to Trados Studio and back again are divided into two groups:

  • File opening: contains settings that specify how particular XTM Cloud segment statuses are converted when the file they are in is imported into Trados Studio from XTM Cloud. These settings are displayed in the File opening list.

  • File saving: contains settings that specify how particular segment statuses are converted back to XTM Cloud statuses when the file they are in is saved in Trados Studio and returned to XTM Cloud. These settings are displayed in the File saving list.

Generally, a segment status that is defined in XTM Cloud is matched with an equivalent standard segment status in Trados Studio. When the segments in a source file are exported to Trados Studio, from XTM Cloud, their status is converted to that equivalent Trados Studio segment status. This status is displayed in the Trados Studio editor screen (in the central status column) when a particular Linguist is translating the file.

In XTM Cloud, you can use the Offline Editors parameters to specify segment statuses that are applied to XLIFF files on export from XTM Cloud and import back into it (Configuration → Settings → Translation → Offline EditorsXLIFF status mapping).

There is a limitation on segment statuses, when segments are exported from XTM Cloud. Only segments with one of these statuses will be displayed in Trados Studio:

  • Untouched (i.e. no status defined – these segments will contain no translation and will need to be translated)/

  • Translated/

  • Translated and completed.

The Trados Studio segment statuses are then converted back to their XTM Cloud equivalents when the segments are returned to XTM Cloud after translation. This ensures, for example, that:

  • incomplete segments are automatically flagged for any follow-on tasks (“workflow steps”), such as Review, in XTM Cloud.

  • complete segments are sent to the relevant customer translation memory, in XTM Cloud.
