How to replace a project's target files with new ones, in XTM Cloud

Introduction

At some point in your standardized project workflow, you might consider changing your target language to one of its other variants.

For example, you might like to change Chinese (Traditional) to Chinese (Simplified). For this reason, you might also be wondering if it is possible to apply this change to your pending projects which still have Chinese (Traditional) as their target language, for example, for the sake of your current integration with a third-party CMS, to which target files are drawn automatically.

This article provides guidelines for replacing a current project’s target files with new ones in the XTM Cloud UI.

Instructions

To replace a project's target files with new ones, take the steps below (based on the example above):

  1. Create a twin project (Project A) containing the same source files and source language, and Chinese (Simplified) as the target language.

  2. Perform translation and make sure that you generate the target files (select Project Editor → Files → All files and then select Generate target in the Target column).

  1. Next, download the files. You will obtain a ZIP archive containing all your project’s target files. Do not unpack it.

  1. Upload Project A’s ZIP archive into your original project (Project B), in which Chinese (Traditional) is the target language.

IMPORTANT!

At this point, the upload process might fail, generating this error message in the UI:

This archive cannot be uploaded. It contains the following files that do not match any files from the project: {LIST_OF_FILES…}

This issue stems from the fact that some, or all, of your target files that have been uploaded to the All Files row have incorrect names.

When you upload a ZIP archive that contains target files, the files must have the same names as those currently in the project. For that reason, you would need to unpack the ZIP archive, change the affected file names, zip them and then upload the archive again.

  1. That is it! You have successfully replaced the target files in the original project (Project B) with new ones (from Project A)! In this way, manually-uploaded target files will overwrite the previously generated target files, which can then be sent to your third-party CMS without any issues along the way.

Good to know!

Keep in mind that uploaded target files do not affect your translation memory (TM) at all. This means that translations from the uploaded target files will not be present in the TM.

If a continuous project update is performed, or the project is simply reanalyzed, all target files (whether generated or uploaded manually) are removed.
