Aligning translation memory (TM) to a new base source language in XTM Cloud
Introduction
Due to different scenarios and circumstances, you might decide that you need to change your base source language (the primary source language from which you translate your content into other languages) to another base source language from which you will now translate into your target languages.
Example:
Suppose you want to change your source language from German (Germany) to English (UK), from which you would then translate into your target languages, such as German (Germany), French (France), etc.
The question you might pose at this point is whether it would it be possible to somehow align your existing translation memory to English (UK) as the source language so that you can use existing TM matches for future translations, e.g. from English (UK) to France (French) or German (Germany).
What can you do by yourself?
Using the example shown in the Introduction part, there are a couple of steps you should take to make use of all the translation memory (TM) that you have created from those languages.
In the case of the German (Germany) → English (UK) language pair, enabling Reverse memory matching would be sufficient for finding TM matches the other way round:
In XTM Cloud, go to Configuration → Settings → Translation → TM → Matches - general, and select Reverse memory matching (administrative privileges required!).
Do not forget to save the changes!
However, any other language combinations will need to be configured separately. This can be achieved by:
exporting the TM for English (UK) and TM for e.g. French (France) in XLSX format (for information about exporting TM, see this article: How to export a translation memory (TM) from XTM Cloud).
using XTM Align to match the English (UK) with French (France) translations (for information about aligning TM, see this article: How to align translated documents).
finally, importing the aligned TM into XTM Cloud (for information about importing TM, see this article: How to import a translation memory (TM) into XTM Cloud).
Since the procedure described above might require a lot of work on your side, it is also possible to have this work done with the assistance of the XTM ProServices team who could create an automation for this action. Keep in mind though, that there is usually an additional charge for services of this kind. For more information, contact XTM Support.
