Introduction

The process of saving raw Machine Translation (MT) matches in the TM in the XTM Cloud UI is fairly common. This practice is typical of fully automated workflows, which usually consists in leveraging the project with MT matches in its entirety and then finishing jobs automatically.

There is an article describing the automated workflow procedure in detail. Therefore, before you read on the contents of this article, make sure you first have a good understanding of how to set up the automated workflow in XTM Cloud: How to Set Up a Project to Start and Finish Automatically.

Problem description

XTM Cloud by default does not save raw MT in the TM. However, taking automated workflows aside, there are two frequent mistakes made by clients who are trying to save raw MT matches:

  • Lack of linguist’s manual input in the segments → The raw MT has to be manually approved by the linguist. If such approval is not done, the MT match is not saved in the TM. You can easily determine whether or not any manual action was taken by the linguist, by looking at the Statistics tab of a particular project.

  • Using the Approve TM for this project option from the project’s context menu → Contrary to many clients' belief, the said option does not save MT matches in the TM. The main reason for it is that the Approve TM for this project option only works on existing TM entries. Since the raw MT is not saved in the TM yet, this option will not do anything, let alone approving the TM. The Approve TM auto-step, on the other hand, goes through the segments in XTM Workbench and saves them in the TM.

Different ways of saving Raw MT in the TM

There are a couple of ways in which you can easily save raw MT in the TM, in XTM Cloud:

Use of the Approve TM auto-step (described in detail here)

This depends on the approve TM criteria, which by default are segment status set to done, changed target text and/or ICE/Leveraged match exists. Therefore, segments that either have status set as Done OR changed target text (which means source != target) will be saved in the TM.

Match raw MT in XTM Workbench and populate it automatically

Upon entering XTM Workbench in the edit mode, an MT match will be populated automatically. As long as no other match, e.g. ICE/Leveraged, etc., is not already populated, the MT match will be saved in the TM straightaway.

Manually changing status from Incomplete to Completed

This most standard way for raw MT to be saved in the TM is to open XTM Workbench, and manually change segments from Incomplete to Completed. Of course, you do not necessarily have to act on each segment separately. To expedite the process, you can make use of the Change segment status option (File → Change status), that will do it for you, for all segments at once in a particular file.
